Biographical Fiction
There seems to be a trend in novels these days--fictionalizing a biography. The latest one that I read last week was Melanie Benjamin's The Aviator's Wife, a depiction of Anne Morrow Lindbergh that I was prepared to dislike. Having read all of the diaries and letters, plus the incredible Gift from the Sea, I was concerned that this would trivialize a rather remarkable life. But using the novel as her vehicle, Benjamin is able to create Anne as a person who went from a timid, submissive girl to a strong, forceful woman. Wonderfully researched and sure to bring readers to AML's volumes of diaries and letters because they'll want to know more.
