Question of the Week

Have you ever thrown a book across the room?

No, but I've wanted to. I've wanted to SO much - and if my aim wasn't so terrible, I might actually do it. Here's a bit about one book that I've wanted to throw at the wall...

It was a romance novel titled, Trouble in Texas, by Katie Lane. The books in this series tend to be over the top and include unrealistic hijinks that are quite fun to read. However, one scene in this book yanked me out of the story so hard that I almost had skid marks on my bum.

Here's the situation that annoyed me: The main character, Elizabeth, was a 37 year old virgin until she met Brant. They fought their attraction but eventually succumbed. During one of their bedroom sessions Elizabeth confessed her love, and Brant's asinine response was that she didn't really know what she was feeling. That she was mixing up lust and love...in other words, she only thought that she loved him because he was the first person she'd ever had sex with.

Now, I can see that it might be possible for teens or young adults to mix up those feelings. But at 37!?! Not hardly. Elizabeth's lack of experience with romantic love and intimacy DO NOT preclude her knowledge of said love, especially at her age. She knows what she's feeling. In the book Brant quickly sees the error of his ways, realizing that this response was his way of dealing with those pesky, terrifying feelings of attachment and love. But still...this is one of those romance novel tropes that DRIVES ME NUTS!

After I got over my pique and started reading again, I found the conclusion enjoyable. I will continue to read this series, but I'm crossing my fingers, hoping that the author doesn't put a similar situation in her upcoming books.
