I Can't Believe I Read the Whole Thing--and Liked it!

Last week I finished The Last Lion, William Spencer Churchill. Defender of the Realm by William Manchester,  This was about as close to biography-perfection as they come.  Paul Reid did a remarkable job picking up Manchester's research and writing after Manchester could no longer continue his work.  And yes, it is 1182 pages, but well-worth the effort.  What other "doorstop books" would you recommend?

For me, Neal Stephenson is the master of the weighty tome, especially his Baroque Cycle, an historical fiction series which follows characters through the political, religious, and scientific trends of the 1600's and 1700's on both sides of the Atlantic.

Neal Stephenson's historical fiction series, The Baroque Cycle, is set in the 17th and 18th centuries and tips the scales with its detailed descriptions of the time period and the political, religious, and scientific trends occurring on both sides of the Atlantic.

at 475 pages, it pales in comparison to the previously-mentioned tomes, I think The Shoemaker's Wife by Adriana Trigiani is a winner.

At 475 pages, it somehow pales in comparison to those previously mentioned, but Adriana Trigiani's The Shoemaker's Wife is a winner.
