When I was small, my family had a tradition. On Saturday nights, we'd go to Pizza Hut and when we arrived back home, we'd turn on Star Trek: The Next Generation to watch as a family. I was fascinated by the variety of worlds and cultures, the scientific possibilities and impossibilities, and the great adventures...So, it was the most natural thing in the world for me to start reading science fiction. Then, as I grew older, I began reading romance novels and thought to myself, "What if there were science fiction romance - books that meld two of my favorite genres together?" I was floored when I discovered that such books existed. Here are a few of my favorites:
An Accidental Goddess - Linnea Sinclair
Raheiran Special Forces captain Gillaine Davr has just woken up in some
unknown space way station, wondering where the last three hundred years
have gone. The last thing she remembers is her ship being attacked. Now
it seems that while she was time-traveling, she was ordained a goddess.
Gillaine's only hope of survival rests with dangerously seductive
Admiral Mack Makarian, who suspects her of being a smuggler or worse.
But he can't begin to imagine the full extent of it. For Gillaine is now
Lady Kiasidira, holy icon to countless believers, including Mack - a man
who inspires feelings in her that are far from saintly, feelings she
knows are mutual. But when their flirtation is interrupted by a
treacherous enemy from the past, Gillaine's secret could destroy them both.
Enemy Within - Marcella Burnard
After a stint in an alien prison, Captain
Ari Rose wonders why she even bothered to survive. Stripped of her
command and banished to her father's scientific expedition to finish a
Ph.D. she doesn't want, Ari never planned to languish quietly behind a
desk. But when pirates commandeer her
father's ship, Ari once again becomes a prisoner. As far as pirate
leader Cullin is concerned, Ari's past imprisonment puts her dead center
in Cullin's sights. If she hasn't been brainwashed and returned as a
spy, then he's convinced she must be part of a traitorous alliance
endangering billions of lives. Cullin can't afford the desire she fires
within him and he'll stop at nothing, including destroying her, to
uncover the truth.
Stardoc - S.L. Viehl
Dr. Cherijo Grey Veil leaves Earth and accepts a position as a physician
at Kevarzanga-2's Free Clinic. Her surgical skills are desperately
needed on a hostile frontier world with over 200 sentient species--and
her understanding of alien physiology is nothing short of miraculous.
But the truth behind her expertise is a secret which, if discovered,
could have disastrous consequences between human and alien relations...
Grimspace - Ann Aguirre
As the carrier of a rare gene, Sirantha Jax has the ability to jump
ships through grimspace-a talent which makes her a highly prized
navigator for the Corp. Then a crash landing kills everyone on board,
leaving Jax in a jail cell with no memory of the crash. But her fun's
not over. A group of rogue fighters frees her...for a price: her help in
overthrowing the established order.
The Best of All Possible Worlds - Karen Lord
A proud and reserved alien society finds its homeland destroyed in an
unprovoked act of aggression, and the survivors have no choice but to
reach out to the indigenous humanoids of their adopted world, to whom
they are distantly related. They wish to preserve their cherished way of
life but come to discover that in order to preserve their culture, they
may have to change it forever. Now a man and a woman from these
two clashing societies must work together to save this vanishing
race—and end up uncovering ancient mysteries with far-reaching
ramifications. As their mission hangs in the balance, this unlikely
team—one cool and cerebral, the other fiery and impulsive—just may find
in each other their own destinies . . . and a force that transcends all.
